South-west vs east coast: when to swim where
Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so one coast is always in season. Here's how to pick the right side of the island for your dates.
The single most useful thing to understand about a Sri Lanka beach trip is that the island runs on two monsoons. There is almost always a coast that's calm, sunny, and swimmable — the trick is matching your dates to the right side.
The short version
- South-west & south coasts (Bentota, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa, Weligama): best roughly December to April.
- East coast (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay): best roughly May to September.
If you're coming in January for beaches, go south. If you're coming in July, go east. Trying to swim on the wrong coast in the wrong month usually means grey skies and a rough, closed-out sea.
Why it happens
The south-west monsoon (Yala) brings wind and rain to the west and south from about May to September, while the east stays dry. The north-east monsoon (Maha) flips it from about December to February. April and September are the gentle shoulder months when both coasts can be lovely at once.
What this means for a two-week trip
You don't have to choose. A common shape is to spend the hill-country and cultural-triangle days in the middle of the trip — those are good year-round — and anchor the beach days on whichever coast is in season for your dates.
Planning around whales? Mirissa's blue-whale season (roughly November–April) lines up neatly with south-coast swimming, so you get both in one stretch.
When you plan with Travator, it already knows this — ask for "beaches in July" and it'll steer you east, not south.
