One week, first time: a route that just works
The classic seven-day loop through the cultural triangle, hill country, and south coast — and why it flows the way it does.
If it's your first time and you have a week, you don't need to be clever. There's a well-worn loop that works precisely because it respects the roads and the seasons. Here's the shape, and the logic underneath it.
The route
- Arrive → Sigiriya (cultural triangle). Skip Colombo; drive north.
- Sigiriya. Dawn climb of the rock, Dambulla caves, an elephant safari at Minneriya or Kaudulla.
- Sigiriya → Kandy. Spice garden en route, evening puja at the Temple of the Tooth.
- Kandy → Ella. The scenic hill-country train, tea estates, the Nine Arch Bridge.
- Ella. Sunrise on Little Adam's Peak, a slow day in the hills.
- Ella → south coast. Descend to Mirissa or Unawatuna for the beach.
- Beach → airport. A final swim, then the drive back for your flight.
Why it flows this way
It only climbs once and descends once. You go up into the hills in the middle and come down to the coast at the end — no backtracking over the same passes.
It front-loads the early mornings. Sigiriya and Kandy reward dawn starts; doing them first, while you're still jet-lagged and waking early, is a gift.
It ends somewhere you won't want to leave. Finishing on the coast means your last memory is a slow beach day, not a highway.
Making it yours
Swap the south coast for the east if you're travelling May–September. Add two days and you can fold in Nuwara Eliya's tea country or a Yala safari without rushing. Start the whole thing in the chat — describe your dates and it'll place the nights for you.
